A Message to the Resolutionists: Get in shape....STAY IN SHAPE

The new year is approaching us again.  And just like last year, everyone's favorite resolution is to get in shape.  Hopefully, this won't mirror last year for everyone where they start working out and have lost the urge by February.

Tomorrow is not promised to any of us.  But if we make a commitment to a healthier lifestyle, we can enjoy all of the tomorrows to come.  So remember that a commitment to getting into better shape is just that:  a commitment.  Don't give up and never let anyone or anything stop your progress.  You must adapt all the things that contribute to you getting in better shape into your everyday lifestyle.  If it means slowly backing away from soft drinks and fried foods, it can be done.  If it means a little less salt on your food or sugar in your oatmeal, it can be done.  If it means exercising and educating yourself on fitness, IT CAN BE DONE!

Just know that every journey begis with a single step.  The longer you keep move, the sooner you'll be ruuning on your way to a healtheir life.  Start the journey, stay the course, and reap the benefits.

ADAPT by Anthony Hall, CPT

Adaptation has at least three different definitions.  In the case of fitness, the most appropriate of those may be "something adapted to fit need: something that has been modified to suit different conditions or a different purpose".

Adapting a healthy lifestyle requires change.  In seeking to make things happen in this pursuit, you ultimately want things about yourself to change.  Therefore, you have to change the things around you.  Does this mean training in a brand-new environment.  It may but let's be clear:  the environment may not be the facility of choice.  It may even be the people around you.  Working out and bouncing ideas off of like-minded individuals such as yourself may help you more than you know.

You must also change your eating habits.  Is this to suggest you go cold turkey?  Absolutely not.  But, once again, you must do what works for you.  There were days when I worked out and never gained any true weight.  I ate everything that could be eaten within the confines of my liking:  ham, fried chicken, porkchops, honey buns, cakes, pies - you name it and I ate it.  However, began to see that in order for me to reach my goals, I had to change my eating habits.  The same must happen for you if you seek to change your look much less your lifestyle.  There are a million and one studies on foods that have been and are being conducted.  Yet, there are some that are universally recognized as staples in a healthy eating plan.

Above all else, know that change is a constant.  It HAS to happen in order to reach your fitness goals.  Your environment and eating habits must adapt to the pursuit of your goals - long and short-term. Also know that change does not have to happen all at once, but it HAS to happen if you want to get where you want to go.  We have allo heard the saying:  "if you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've also gotten".  The same applies to personal fitness.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS by Anthony Hall, CPT

In the continuous pursuit of physical fitness, some of us often fall by the wayside.  Sometimes, we begin our journey only to drift back into bad habits.  Other times, we just don't know where to start.  How can we solve these issues?

In working out, I've found that a strong support system works wonders for those seeking to create a better life through fitness.  Recently, I've consulted many friends on exercise - trying to provide motivation and keep them focused.  The idea that someone actually wants to see you become a better YOU can be golden, no matter where you are on your journey.  I have also found support in various forms myself.

For those of you familiar with facebook, I am part of a group that has become an extended family called FITNESS FOR ALL.  The group is headed by Lynn Scott, who himself is changing through fitneess and is seeking Personal Training Certification.  In the group, we support each other with no prejudice or discrimination.  If you are not on facebook, feel free to send me questions and I will answer them to the best of my growing fitness knowledge.  I've gotten and given support from and to friends and family in and out of the gym and in other places.  The goal, as legendary Mr. Olympia Lee Haney often states, is to "Stimulate, not annihilate".

And, of course, keep checking out FITNESS ALPHA as I relay information for people of all fitness levels.

STAY FIT, EVERYONE!!!
